In May 1. 98. 3, Hogan won the first IWGP Championship in a tournament which included Antonio Inoki, Andre The Giant, Big John Studd, Killer Khan, and other greats. After some seasoning, and due to his popularity that he developed in the AWA, Hogan turned into an American patriot, ready to make himself one of the greats. Hogan proved himself in the WWF by pinning the Iron Sheik in 1. WWF Heavyweight Champion. He would hold it against all comers for 4 years, feuding with guys like . One memorable match was when Hogan teamed up with then- tv star Mr. T to fight Piper and Orndorff at the first Wrestlemania, with Muhammad Ali as the special guest referee. At Wrestlemania II, Hogan battled Bundy in a bloody Steel Cage match. Even with taped ribs, Hogan won out, staying the champion. Andre demanded a title shot, saying that he deserved the gold. At the time, Andre had rarely been taken down, so this was a major threat to Hogan. The two brawled for the next couple of months, leading up to Wrestlemania III, where they finally met for the World Championship. In one of the most remembered wrestling moments of all time, Hogan picked up the 5. Giant and bodyslammed him, getting the pinfall and retaining the gold. This, however, was nowhere near the end of the Hogan/Andre feud. In the next few months, the two faced off multiple times, including Andre winning their Survivor Series match. This time, Andre had the backing of . After a quick 3 count, Andre apparently won the title. He then gave it to Di. Biase, which eventually vacated the gold, leading up to the World Title Tournament at Wrestlemania IV. Hogan and Andre met in the first round, and fought to a Double Disqualifcation, when both used foreign objects on each other. In the finals, it was . Di. Biase, with Andre still helping the Million Dollar Man. But Hogan came out to even the odds, when the lovely Elizabeth, Savage's valet, asked him to, and helped Savage get the victory and the title. This was the formation of the Mega- Powers, a great tag- team that battled every heel group for the next year. During this time, Hogan had a short feud with the Big Boss Man (Traylor) and Akeem (One Man Gang), who were known as the Twin Towers. During a battle between the Twin Towers and the Mega- Powers, Elizabeth was injured. Hogan carried her to the back, while Savage continued the match. This caused Savage's jealousy of Hogan's attention towards Elizabeth to explode, and the two former partners were soon feuding. Hogan's fame had grown so that the craze of . He single- handedly brought the WWF into prosperous times. Hogan later teamed up with Brutus Beefcake (Disciple) as the Megamaniacs. The team was formed to combat the duo of Savage and Zeus, a monster wrestler who Hogan had 'fought' in the movie . Hogan feuded with Savage & Zeus for most of '8. Hogan also came out triumphant at the Royal Rumble '9. One of the men he helped to eliminate, though, was the Ultimate Warrior, a wrestler he had partnered with in the past. Both the Warrior and Hogan were considered faces, and both held titles (the Warrior had the Intercontinental Title). This was another tremendous battle, as many fans weren't sure who to root for. At the end, Hogan seemed to take control, but he missed the Big Leg Drop. This allowed the Warrior to get up and hit his running splash, defeating Hogan cleanly for the World Title. After the match, Hogan and the Warrior embraced, showing their mutual respect. Many called this Hogan's way of passing the torch. But Hogan wasn't done by a long shot. He teamed with another large man, Tugboat, against Earthquake and his Canadian backer, Dino Bravo, and the two groups fought many times. Hogan won one match over Earthquake by tossing him to the outside, where he couldn't get up to answer the bell. Hogan also was the sole survivor of his Survivor Series team, then went on to win the . Hogan fortunately drew a late number, and eliminated 7 wrestlers to win for the second time in a row. This made him the #1 Contender to the World Title, which was around the waist of Sgt. Slaughter had turned his alligiance to Iraq, joining with Col. Mustafa and General Adnan. The two feuded for the next couple of months. At one memorable event, Slaughter blasted a fireball into Hogan's face, trying to permanently injure him. At Wrestlemania VII, Hogan came through, defeating the Sarge to gain the WWF World Title for a third time. Hogan would continue to feud with Slaughter and his entourage for the next few months, and was joined by the Ultimate Warrior. Hogan and the Warrior won out in the end, although there was some tension between Hogan and Justice. But Hogan had worse things to worry about, namely the coming of the Undertaker. The Undertaker seemed unstoppable at the time, seemingly not feeling any pain, no matter what the Hulkster threw at him. At the Survivor Series, they finally fought for the gold. Although Hogan gave it his best, aid from Ric Flair allowed the Undertaker to tombstone Hogan on a chair, putting him out long enough for the Undertaker to pin him and take away the World Title. A week later, at a PPV event called . Unfortunately, during the fight, WWF President Jack Tunney had been knocked out by Hogan. Tunney later reviewed the match and vacated the World Title, saying that the winner of the '9. Royal Rumble would get the belt. At the end of the event, Hogan, Sid Justice, and Ric Flair were the last ones in the ring. Hogan was surprisingly eliminated by Justice, who was supposedly Hogan's friend. Hogan then grabbed Justice's arm, holding him long enough for Flair to come over and toss him, allowing Flair to win the World Title. This started a short feud between Hogan and Justice, culminating at Wrestlemania VIII, where Hogan won via DQ over big Sid. After the victory, though, Hogan briefly faded from view as others took their place near the top. A year later, Hogan returned, aiding his old partner Brutus Beefcake against the attacks of Ted Di. Biase and Irwin R. The two teams fought at Wrestlemania IX, with the Tag- Team Titles that Di. Biase & IRS held on the line. In the end, due to interference from Jimmy Hart, Hogan & Beefcake lost via DQ. This was soon forgotten, though, as Hogan moved back up to the top later in the night. Fuji, Yokozuna's manager, threw salt into Hart's face, Yokozuna was able to defeat him for the title. Hogan came out to protest, telling the ref about what happened. Yokozuna in turn challenged Hogan, and the two suddenly started fighting. Fuji tried the salt trick again, only to hit Yokozuna by mistake. Hogan then made the pinfall, surprisingly becoming the WWF World Champion for the 5th time in his career. Hogan would hold the belt for 2 months before losing in the rematch with Yokozuna at King of the Ring '9. Soon after the defeat, Hogan left the WWF, to try his luck in WCW. Hogan's impact in WCW was immediate, as he was immediately signed to face WCW World Champion Ric Flair, his old nemesis from the WWF, at Bash at the Beach '9. With Shaquille O'Neal in his corner, the Hulkster managed to defeat Flair, winning the WCW World Title for the first time. Hogan continued to feud with Flair for the next few events, eventually defeating him at Halloween Havoc '9. Hogan then began fighting his former friend Brutus Beefcake, who was known as the Butcher in WCW. The Butcher joined up with Kevin Sullivan and Avalanche (formerly Earthquake) to fight Hogan and his allies, Randy Savage and Sting. Supposedly, the Butcher was angry with Hogan for always stealing the spotlight. At Starrcade '9. 4, Hogan retained his gold, defeating the Butcher. They first fought at Superbrawl '9. Flair gave Hogan the DQ victory. Vader and Hogan then agreed to settle things at Uncensored, in a Strap match. Flair again interfered, though, trying to stop Hogan from tagging all four corners. It didn't work, as Hogan got the victory, retaining the title. Hogan and his partner, Savage, then pleaded with WCW management to reinstate Flair, so that they could legally face him in the ring. Their wish was granted, and the . As expected, Hogan & Savage got the victory. The feud with Vader finished up at Bash at the Beach '9. Hogan once again got the victory, hanging onto the WCW World Title. But things were coming that would put a stop to Hogan's winning streak. This was when the Giant (Big Show) first appeared on the scene, attacking Hogan and proclaiming that he was the son of Andre (he wasn't). The two men met at Halloween Havoc '9. Hogan apparently won. They then met in the ring, in a major contest between the two. In the end, though, the match was decided by Hogan's manager, Jimmy Hart, who attacked the Giant to give him the DQ win. Hart then turned on Hogan, helping the Yeti to attack him. It was later revealed by Hart that the contract Hogan had signed (with Hart's help) turned the World Title over if there was a DQ. Therefore, the Giant was the new WCW World Champion. Hogan soon was coming out wearing all black, and being a darker type of wrestler. The World Title was later held up, and the first World War III event was arranged to decide the new champion. Sixty men entered into 3 rings to fight it out, with Hogan lasting most of the way. Near the end, Hogan eliminated the Giant, who then pulled Hogan under the ropes. Hogan wasn't eliminated, but as he fought with the Giant, Randy Savage managed to toss out the remaining contestants, and, thus, was declared the winner and the new champion. Hogan protested, telling Savage that he was never tossed over the top rope, but the decision stood.
